Temperatures are rising, and the lawn is starting to grow again. Many robotic lawn mower owners then ask themselves: When should I take the robotic lawn mower out of its winter break? When does it need to be mowed for the first time? How do I prepare the robotic lawn mower for the new gardening season?

In this article, you'll learn everything about preparing and setting up your robotic lawn mower, the right time to de-winterize it, and what else you should consider for the first lawn care after winter.

When does the season start for robotic lawn mowers?

The winter break for your robotic lawn mower ends exactly when the grass starts to grow again. This, of course, depends on the weather in your region. Grass slowly begins to grow at around 6 degrees Celsius, and the main growth phase starts at 10 °C. As a rule of thumb, the best time for the first cut is between late March and early April. From then on, you can let the robot mow regularly again.

What do I need to consider for the first use in spring?

The appropriate cutting height at the start of the season

If the lawn is already higher than your robotic lawn mower's maximum cutting height, you should first mow the lawn with a conventional lawn mower. Always observe these two rules:

• The One-Third Rule: Lawn should generally only ever be cut by one-third of its length. If too much is cut off, the shoots can be damaged. Then it takes longer for the lawn to recover. In dry conditions, it can cause the lawn to burn and turn brown. Gradually approach the desired lawn length cut by cut.
• The mulching principle of the robotic lawn mower: A robotic lawn mower is always also a mulching mower. The grass clippings remain as fertilizer, heat protection, and protection against evaporation. If the grass was too high, a too-dense mulch layer forms (grass thatch or diseases). Ensure a regular mowing rhythm so that the robot mows more often and cuts less grass each time.

Spring Check for the Robotic Lawn Mower

Before the first lawn mowing in March, you should give the robot a quick check. If you didn't clean it in autumn, do so now. Dirt on the contact surfaces can cause the mower not to charge correctly.

Check Charging Station & Signals

Connect the charging station to the power supply and check the indicator light:

• LED green: All OK – the loop signal is active.
• LED yellow or blue: A malfunction exists (often a cable break or signal problem).
• LED off or red: A malfunction exists. Please check this according to your model's operating manual or contact technical service.

Charging Contacts and Maintenance

For optimal contact, the metal contacts should protrude approx. 3 mm from the plastic housing. If the distance is too small, you can carefully bend the contact open with a flat-head screwdriver. During storage, corrosion (verdigris) can also occur. If this is the case, remove the verdigris with fine sandpaper.

Battery Fitness

The battery is maintenance-free but ages with use (charge cycles). Its fitness strongly depends on the duration of use. With increasing use, the battery capacity decreases, meaning the robotic lawn mower returns to the charging station more frequently.

• Perform the battery capacity check when it is fully charged.
• If the capacity is below approx. 900 mAh, the battery should be replaced.
• Under normal circumstances, approx. 2000 charges (cycles) are possible.

Functionality & Software Check

• Blades: Are the blades still sharp?
• Updates: Is there a firmware update for your model or an update for the app control in the App Store?
• Settings: Are the date and time still correct? Is the robot's schedule up to date?
• System Test: Is the battery fully charged, and does the mower return to the charging station independently?

Boundary Wire & Garden Check

Check the boundary wire: Is it still optimally laid? Are the fastening hooks firmly anchored in the ground with the cable? For new obstacles in the garden, the cable must be adapted to the new circumstances.

Garden Check before the first mowing

• Remove obstacles such as mole hills, toys, garden tools, old leaves, branches, and fallen fruit.
• Check that the cable is laid so that sensitive plants or the garden pond are safely circumvented.
• Are obstacles and boundaries clearly visible (boundary stones freed from overgrown plants)?
